oña Ana County Airport (5T6) seems like most typical small airports. It has an FBO, T-hangars and a couple of repairs shops on the field. Map location of Dona Ana County Santa Teresa New Mexico What comes as a complete surprise is the War Eagles Air Museum at midfield. In fact, if you didn't know it was there you might miss it completely. 5T6 is located just west of El Paso, Texas and just north of the Mexico border. In fact, if you're flying from a southern state, you will probably fly right over El Paso International. The museum is housed in a 64,000 sq ft building and is full of vintage airplanes. Most of the airplanes are World War II era and they also have jets from the Korean conflict and later.War Eagles Museum In addition to airplanes, there are some military vehicles exhibits, quite a few classic cars and some other attractions. The museum also contains a fairly large gift shop with a wide variety of items reflecting the history and nostalgia of the planes exhibited. Much of the museum staff is made up of volunteers who also work on the planes and help however they can. On my visit a very nice older gentleman was kind enough to take me on a personal tour and explain interesting information about each of the planes on display. I was even offered a visit inside one of the DC-3s. The museum is laid out as an organized self-tour. You could easily spend an hour or two looking at all the displays. The airplanes are roped off, but are still very close. Some displays, such as one of the P-51 Mustangs, actually allow you to climb up steps hawker furywhere you have a full view of the cockpit. In the case of the P-51, the right wing top is actually covered with clear plexiglass so the guns and ammunition can be clearly seen. There are over 30 planes (most in flying condition) and probably 40 or more classic cars. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10AM - 4PM. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for military and seniors and free for children and students. There website is: War Eagles Museum
